YoYoTricks.com Sage Classic Yoyo Review

An exclusive to YoYoTricks.com, The Sage Yoyo was designed specifically for players learning how to yoyo on YoYoTricks.com. Built to our specifications by YoYoFactory, we wanted The Sage to be the yoyo for someone who is looking for that one yoyo that can introduce them to all the different yoyo play styles. For someone who is new to yoyoing, The Sage plays easy and responsive out of the box. It is well suited to all kinds of basic string tricks as well as certain looping tricks that involve the Flip motion, like Shoot the Moon and Stalls. To keep The Sage playing like new we recommend getting some Thin Yoyo Lube which helps protect the bearing and keeps it playing responsive. This lube is included in The Sage Yoyo Starter Pack, recommended for anyone who is new to yoyoing, but is serious about starting to learn tricks.

For more advanced Unresponsive String Tricks, The Sage can be easily upgraded with the addition of a VIP yoyo bearing (sold separately, or as a part of The Sage Yoyo Starter Pack). Swapping out the included thin bearing for the VIP bearing will more than double sleep times and opens up a whole new world of tricks for more advanced players.

For those interested in 3A style yoyoing, 2 Sage yoyos upgraded with VIP yoyo bearings can’t be beat for the price. For 5A (Freehand), its light, wide, and nimble build can only be beat by yoyos specifically designed for that style. After swapping out the thin bearing for the VIP bearing in the Starter Pack, just pick up some counterweights and you are ready to go. (We do not recommend the Sage for Offstring style play.)

In July 2013 we here at YoTricks received the sad news that the Luminator yoyo we had used to teach most of our tricks on YoTricks.com was being discontinued. After a sufficient period of mourning, and lots of coffee cake, we contacted YoYoFactory in the hope that they could replace the Luminator for us, producing a new yoyo with the same winning qualities as the Luminator. Specifically, we wanted a yoyo that was inexpensive, played great and easy with no modifications, but could also be modified to handle more difficult Unresponsive Tricks.

With our combined knowledge and vision, YoTricks.com and YoYoFactory produced The Sage. Like the Luminator before it, the Sage Yoyo is easy to pick up and play. It comes with a thin bearing that plays very responsive and can sleep for 30-45 seconds with a good throw. Unlike the Luminator, however, the Sage has a very modern design, being patterned after the legendary Protostar yoyo – often considered one of the best plastic yoyos ever made. This basic Protostar design was simplified for The Sage, offering a less expensive yoyo that still has many of the benefits of the Protostar’s shape. It is this wide flared design that helps The Sage vastly outperform the Luminator when it comes to learning String Tricks, especially when getting into more advanced play.
